Riding Georgia
Riding Georgia is a visual journey into the world of riders and horses across the country — a deeply rooted yet often overlooked aspect of Georgian culture. Horses have played a vital role in Georgia’s history, from the cavalry of ancient kingdoms to their presence in modern-day rural life and competitive sports.
This project emerged naturally from my own life’s transitions. Before photography, I was dedicated to human rights law in Russia. But the war in Ukraine in 2022 deeply shook my sense of purpose. In that time of uncertainty, I found solace in an old passion — horses. They became my anchor, guiding me toward a new creative direction.
Through this series, I document the diverse equestrian culture of Georgia, from high-level competitions to remote mountain trails. Through this project, I also explore the dynamics between horse and rider— trust, communication, and mutual dependence. Additionally, I shed light on the conditions in which horses are kept, examining the balance between tradition, care, and animal well-being.
Riding Georgia is more than a project about horses — it’s about the people who dedicate their lives to them, the cultural legacy they carry forward, and the landscapes that shape their journeys.
